Increase Home Value – Plant Trees!
Studies show that mature trees on your property can increase its value by as much as 10%! That means that if you spend a few shekels on some trees at your local nursery, plant them this weekend and maintain them properly, your home might sell for thousands of dollars more in a few years!
Here’s a quote I found on Zillow:
Each buyer or appraiser or agent or owner or arborist will have a different opinion of the tree value issue. My opinion is that each 20+ years mature tree adds about $1,000, each 40+ year tree adds $3,000+ and each 100+ year oak tree adds $5,000++. The area and surrounding property values affect the final value too. On a hot and sunny day, each tree is priceless.
What about Fruit trees?
The results are mixed… Some people find them to be a burden, between the mess they make when they drop fruit and the animals they attract. There are even some religions that forbid the removal of fruit-bearing trees, which might turn off those buyers.
Others love them! Speaking from personal experience, buyers that I bring on home tours almost always point out fruit trees as a highlight rather than a negative.
If you’re going to benefit from the fruit while you live there, plant a fruit tree! If you don’t like them, don’t plant one.
On my property (which is in the heart of the San Fernando Valley), we have one mature tree in the front yard and have planted 8 more since we moved in a few years ago! Yesterday, together with my 4-year-old son, we planted a Weeping Santa Rosa Plum Tree in the front yard and a Red Baron Peach Tree out back. We now have 7 fruit trees and just 2 “boring” trees!
